Weather Tower Description

Anemometer

The Wind Sentry Anemometer and Vane measure horizontal wind speed and wind direction.  They give the measurement in meters per second (m/s).

Antenna

The antenna enables the transmission of the data from the weather station to the computer.

Radiation Sensor

The Quantum Sensor gives the solar radiation reading.

Solar panel

The Solar Panel helps to repower the battery, which runs the weather station and water quality monitor.

Temperature/Relative Humbidity probe

This probe measures the temperature and relative humidity.  The probe is surrounded by a "12 Plate Gill Radiation Shield."

Panel box

This is the "brains" of the weather station. The radio modem, storage module, wiring panel, and even a barometric pressure sensor are located in this box.

Rain bucket

This is the Tipping Bucket Rain Guage. It is located about 5 meters from the weather station and about 1.75 meters off the ground.  It is connected to the weather station by a cable that runs down the post, under the ground, and then into the panel box of the weather station.  The wire springs sticking out of the top are there to keep birds from landing on the bucket.

Battery

This is what powers the weather station and water quality monitor. It is a 12-volt deep cycle marine battery. During the day, the solar panel helps to keep a good charge on the battery.  The rod in front of the battery is a grounding rod, just in case the station is struck by lightning.
